Animal Waste Health Risks for Humans and Pets

Pathogens: Dog and deer feces can harbor bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella, and Campylobacter, as well as viruses like Parvovirus.
Parasites: Common parasites include Roundworms, Hookworms, Whipworms, and Giardia.
Longevity: Some parasite eggs, particularly Roundworms, can remain infectious in the soil for several years even after the waste itself has disappeared.
Zoonotic Transmission: Children are especially vulnerable as they often play in the dirt where they can accidentally ingest or come into direct skin contact with these microscopic hazards

Dog and deer poop are not effective fertilizers for residential lawns, like most cow manure.

Acidity: Due to their high-protein diets, dog waste is highly acidic and can "burn" grass, leading to brown patches and dead zones.

Nutrient Imbalance: The excess nitrogen and phosphorus in pet waste disrupt soil chemistry, often encouraging the growth of weeds rather than healthy grass

Although lower, deer poop still carries Giardia.

Environmental and Community Hazards

Uncollected waste is classified by the EPA as a nonpoint source of pollution, placing it in the same category as toxic chemicals and oil spills.

  • Water Pollution: Rainwater washes fecal matter into storm drains and local waterways. This introduces excess nutrients that cause harmful algae blooms, which deplete oxygen in lakes and kill aquatic life.

  • Vermin Attraction: Accumulated waste attracts pests like rats and mice, which may also carry their own diseases into your property.

  • Reinfection: If you leave waste in the yard, your pets can become repeatedly reinfected with parasites they have already shed.
